Mastering Project Management: Lessons from the Blind Men and the Elephant
Launching a new business is an exhilarating milestone, and at Zenind, we pride ourselves on making US company formation a seamless experience for founders. However, incorporating your startup is just the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey. Once your business is up and running, your ability to execute initiatives and manage projects will ultimately dictate your long-term success.
What does it truly take to keep projects from becoming a chaotic, beastly experience for you and your team? How do you ensure that complex efforts result in resounding success rather than frustration? The answers might be found in a classic piece of literature: John Godfrey Saxe’s famous fable, The Blind Men and the Elephant.
The Blind Leading the Blind
"It was six men of Indostan, to learning much inclined / Who went to 'see' the elephant, though all of them were blind."
In Saxe’s fable, six blind men attempt to describe an elephant. The problem is that each encounters a completely different part of the animal.
"The first approached the elephant and happening to fall / Against his broad and sturdy side at once began to bawl, / 'This wonder of an elephant is very like a wall.'"
Another finds the tusk and swears the elephant is like a spear. Another grabs the trunk and is certain it resembles a snake. Each man vividly and accurately describes his own limited experience of the beast. But because they cannot agree—and cannot see the whole picture—their attempts to describe the animal together create not an elephant, but a chaotic, unsolvable conflict.
Though written over a century ago, this story perfectly encapsulates the modern business workplace. Startups are inherently cross-functional, requiring the enthusiastic contribution of diverse specialists—developers, marketers, financial experts, and sales representatives. Each team member is inevitably "blind" to everything outside their own narrow professional perspective.
When team members stubbornly assert the absolute rightness of their individual viewpoints, projects break down into "theologic wars." The result is a toxic environment where communication stalls, and the project ultimately fails.
The Elephant Hunt: Achieving Coherence
In the past, the traditional solution to these siloed perspectives was a rigid, top-down approach: assign one "blind man" absolute authority and force everyone else to comply. While this might create basic compliance, it never generates the deep, dynamic involvement that modern startup projects demand.
If you consider the most successful project you have ever been a part of, chances are it didn't succeed because of an omniscient leader or a flawless, unchangeable plan. It succeeded because the team figured out how to integrate their disparate perspectives. You managed to "see the elephant" together.
This shared understanding is called coherence—the ability of people to agree about their common experience. Coherence is the foundation of exceptional teamwork. It produces the rare, exhilarating feeling that your group can accomplish anything.
6 Strategies to Help Your Startup "See the Elephant"
How can you encourage this coherence to emerge within your startup? Here are six counter-intuitive strategies for masterful project management.
1. Be Clear About Your Own Purpose
Often, we are told to completely sacrifice our personal goals for the sake of the project. However, quietly suppressing what drives you can undermine your ability to create a meaningful experience. Finding a juicy, personal purpose for your participation is essential. Those who are clear about their own motivations are ultimately much more capable of appreciating and supporting the purposes of their colleagues.
2. Understand Your Intentions Over Your Methods
The specific methods or rigid systems you devise for achieving a goal will frequently fail when they hit the real world. However, if your underlying intentions are crystal clear, you can adapt, pivot, and even completely dismantle your original plan to ensure the actual goal is met. If you blindly follow a broken system like a good soldier, you will only manufacture your own project's failure.
3. Extend Your Trust First
In a startup, extending trust is the price of admission to the team. It is a fundamental human trait to satisfy the expectations others have of us. If you treat your colleagues as untrustworthy, they will naturally give you the defensive, uncooperative behavior you expect. Conversely, when you proactively extend trust, you create an environment where others can prove themselves trustworthy.
4. Let Go of Rigid Roles
We often waste excessive time defining strict roles and responsibilities, essentially cordoning team members into isolated, defensible spaces. Startups thrive in a network of community, not a rigid bureaucracy. Encourage your team to interact in surprising, fluid ways. Staying strictly "in role" often imprisons the best, most enthusiastic parts of your team.
5. Cultivate Intrinsic Motivation
Stop trying to forcefully motivate others through external pressures. Instead, help your team members find their "project within the project." What better motivation is there than knowing your daily assignment is the vehicle through which you are actively pursuing your own professional goals? Help others discover their own internal drive.
6. Sit Comfortably in the Mess
Too often, project managers try to immediately organize a new initiative, hoping to avoid the uncomfortable messiness of the planning phase. Do not insist upon a perfectly formed starting place right out of the gate. Sit comfortably in the mess for a while so you can learn about its true nature before trying to organize or "fix" it. This essential, chaotic milling-around period allows natural order to emerge and marks the true start of a coherent, collective effort.
Creating Your Own Elephant
Managing a startup project doesn't have to degrade into a frustrating clash of isolated perspectives. By recognizing that everyone—including yourself—has a limited view, you can actively work to integrate those diverse viewpoints into a powerful, coherent whole.
At Zenind, we handle the intricacies of your business formation and compliance so you can focus on what matters most: building a brilliant, cohesive team that executes flawlessly. Embrace the varying perspectives within your startup, avoid the blind certainty that leads to conflict, and start creating extraordinary project experiences together.
